Best Flooring Options for Horse Stables in the UAE Climate
Heat, humidity and dust make stable flooring in the UAE a different problem to Europe. This guide covers what works over concrete, how to prepare the sub-base, and how to handle drainage, hygiene and turnout areas.

Stable flooring advice written for northern Europe assumes cold slabs, frost and mud. The UAE gives you the opposite problem set: a concrete floor that bakes, coastal humidity that keeps bedding and ammonia damp, fine dust that gets into every joint, and wash-downs that have to drain fast in the heat. The flooring choices that work here are shaped by those conditions.
The base you build on matters more than the mat
Whatever surface goes on top, it is only as good as what is under it. Most UAE stables are built on a concrete slab; some use a compacted sand or aggregate base. Either way, before any matting goes down:
- Level and smooth. The surface under the mats must be flat. High spots create rocking points that wear the mat and bruise hooves; hollows collect liquid.
- Fall to a drain. Build in a slight, consistent slope — roughly 1:60 to 1:80 — toward a channel or gully so urine and wash water leave quickly instead of sitting under the mat in the heat.
- Free-draining blinding. Over a sand or aggregate base, finish with a well-graded crushed stone blinded with stone dust and compacted hard, so the mat is fully supported.
- Dry before you cover. Trapped construction moisture plus a sealed rubber top is how you get persistent smell and a slippery underside.
Get this wrong and no mat will save you. Get it right and a mid-range mat will outperform an expensive one laid on a poor base.
Rubber stall mats: the default interior choice
For the stall itself, dense recycled-rubber matting is the standard, and for good reason in this climate:
- Thermal buffer. Rubber breaks the contact between the horse and a slab that swings from hot in the afternoon to cool overnight. The horse lies down on a stable surface temperature.
- Joint and tendon comfort. A resilient floor reduces concussion for a horse standing on hard ground for much of the day.
- Grip. A textured rubber surface gives confident footing for getting up and down, wet or dry — unlike sealed concrete or tiles.
- Less bedding. A cushioned, sealed floor needs a fraction of the shavings a bare slab does, which in a region that imports bedding is a running cost that adds up.
- Durability. Recycled SBR rubber shrugs off hooves, barrows and daily mucking out for years.

Hygiene routine, not just product
Because heat and humidity accelerate bacterial and ammonia build-up, the floor system has to be maintainable:
- Muck out fully and let the surface air where possible.
- Lift and wash mats on a schedule — monthly is a reasonable starting point, more often for problem stalls — and scrub and disinfect the sub-base beneath.
- Check seams and edges for lifting or gaps and re-seat mats before liquid starts tracking under them.
- Keep air moving. Cross-ventilation or fans clear the ammonia that otherwise sits at floor level in still, humid conditions.
Outdoor: turnout, gateways and wash bays
The areas that fail first in a UAE yard are the high-traffic outdoor zones — gateways, the strip in front of the barn, wash bays, walker approaches. Bare ground turns to dust or mud; concrete and stone get hot and slick.

Are rubber mats good for horse stables in a hot climate?

Lift and wash the mats periodically, disinfect the sub-base, and keep the stable ventilated. Ammonia builds up where liquid is trapped in still air under loose, gapping mats.
